The process of therapy involves understanding ourselves and how we came to be who we are. It can involve exploration of identity, purpose, and meaning, as well as integration of physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual parts. Therapy is an exploration of our strengths and vulnerabilities as necessary and valuable parts of ourselves that we both cultivate and prune as we activate change. Therapy is a process of curiosity and discovery rather than judgement, and it holds humor and playfulness in addition to tending to concerns. Effective therapy hinges on an authentic therapeutic relationship that collaboratively shifts, evolves, and changes over time.
I trained as an art therapist, drawn to the field by my personal experience of art as a tool for self-expression and healing. Although I’ve worked with many individuals in creative fields, I understand creativity as more than art making. For me, creativity is inherent in how people construct their values, foster relationships, and express, navigate, and protect themselves in the world. In therapy, I help individuals identify how they’re intuitively using their creativity, and can cultivate it in other areas of their life and relationships.
My values related to creativity and self-expression inspired the development of a non-traditional shared space for personal transformation, Tattoo Therapy. I partnered with Kelly Gelling, a tattoo artist sharing similar values related to creativity and personal growth, to create a space to inspire openness, expansion, connection, and transformation. We specifically chose a space a space in DUMBO due to image of connectivity captured by the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and for the neighborhood's focus on community engagement through the arts. Our vision hopes to one day collaborate in the transformative process of both therapy and tattooing occurring concurrently or informing one another. We are open to working with you on any inspiration you have in that process
